    The total amount of money that the United States federal government owes to creditors. The government's creditors include all individuals, businesses, governments and other organizations that own U.S. government debt securities.


    The amount by which the government’s total budget outlays exceeds its total receipts for a fiscal year.

    This year, FY 2015, the federal government in its latest budget has estimated that the deficit will be $439 billion.
